A proof made before the poster for an exhibition of Braque’s collaborative work with the poet René Char. Lettera Amorosa (‘Love Letters’) was a an illustrated book with lithographs and poems printed at Atelier Mourlot. Braque considered lithography to be the ideal technique for illustrating poetry and spent many years in perfecting the prints for this project. The final exhibition was held at the Bibliothèqe Littéraire Jacques Doucet, Paris, in 1963. The lithographic process of introducing each colour separately with different stones allowed Braque to recreate the layers of collage in his prints.
