This impression is inscribed with a dedication to Max de Rieux (born Max Ernest Gautier, 1901-63). He was a French director, actor, screenwriter and producer, with a focus on staging operas. Bolivar was an opera by the French composer Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) and was inspired by Simon Bolivar, the Venezuelan liberator of Latin America from the Spanish Empire. The opera premiered in 1950. Léger, Milhaud and de Rieux started collaborating on the opera from 1943, with Léger designing the set and costumes.
