Eduardo Chillida was born in 1924 in Basque’s San Sebastián. He studied architecture at the University of Madrid and then went on to study art in Paris. He quickly became one of Europe’s foremost sculptors, famed for his monumental works in iron, steel, wood and granite. Chillida explored the relationship between form and space producing austere abstract sculptures. His manipulation of resistant material to create a fluidity of form in space was masterful, and pushed the boundaries of sculpture.
His works on paper are an essential part of his oeuvre, he produced ink and pencil drawings, as well as woodcuts, lithographs and predominantly etchings These share the same formal quality as his sculptures, and equally explore space and abstract form. Chillida made over 650 prints over his career.
Chillida was awarded several prizes for his prints and his sculpture, and he represented Spain at the 1958 Venice Biennale, where he was awarded the 1st prize for sculpture.
His sculptures, drawings, etchings and illustrated books feature in major public and private collections worldwide including the Guggenheim Berlin, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and The Tate Gallery, London.
